The title and other text components of this work draws inspiration from an autobiographical reference to my departure from my mom's house, where I was born and raised, at the age of fifteen. Her lack of knowledge about my whereabouts and my life overall has been both a source of danger and freedom, fear and excitement.
As an adult, I am still doing the work of understanding the parts of me she rejected and, more importantly, the parts of her I did (and still do).
This work is part of a wider research interest regarding silence as a complex political and social phenomenon – not only can silence bring about harm, but it can also provide protection and safety otherwise unattainable.
